The DEL button function was restored after rebooting the system. I downloaded and installed Update KB 3145739 (a security update) from the website. Forget any hope of finding ones with less basic shortcuts 'cause what key combination does what is very likely to depend on which viewer your mouse pointer is hovering over as well as which mode it is in. Just do a google image search for something like “blender keyboard shortcuts” or something. When starting out with Blender, it’s a good idea to get an image or something that has the most common keyboard shortcuts on it.
